PlotJuggler Alternatives and Comparisons: Choose by How You Work
PlotJuggler is a free, offline, open-source (MPL-2.0) desktop application for plotting time-series data — ROS bags, MCAP recordings, CSV files, PX4 ULog flight logs and live streams, analysed by dragging signals onto plots. It is the right tool for a great many robotics and drone engineers. It is not the right tool for everyone: teams that need a shared cloud data platform, developers who would rather log data from code than open files in a GUI, and analysts working across very large volumes of logs all have genuine alternatives, and this section compares them honestly. Every comparison here is grounded in the tools’ own published facts — pricing, licences and formats taken from their official pages — and every verdict is given by user type, because “best” depends entirely on the job. This site is independently operated and is not affiliated with Davide Faconti or the PlotJuggler project; the official project site is plotjuggler.io, and the program itself is on our Download page.
The decision framework: three questions
Before any feature table, answer these three questions. In our experience they decide the outcome more reliably than any list of capabilities.
| Question | If you answer… | Where it points you |
|---|---|---|
| Offline desktop or cloud platform? | “My data stays on my machine; I analyse files and live streams locally, often with no network at all.” | A desktop tool: PlotJuggler first; Rerun’s viewer for code-first teams. |
| “My team needs recordings shared, searchable and reviewable in one hosted place.” | A platform: Foxglove or Rerun Hub — see PlotJuggler Alternatives for the honest scale-out picture. | |
| ROS-native or general-purpose? | “My world is ROS 2 topics, rosbag2 and MCAP.” | PlotJuggler, Foxglove and rqt_plot are all ROS-native; general dashboard tools are not log-file analysers. |
| “My world is flight logs — PX4 ULog or ArduPilot.” | The dedicated roundup: Best Drone Flight Log Analysis Tools. | |
| Free or paid — and what does paid actually buy? | “Free, open-source, no account.” | PlotJuggler (MPL-2.0), Rerun (MIT/Apache-2.0 SDK and viewer), rqt_plot (ships with ROS). |
| “Happy to pay for team features, hosted storage and support.” | Foxglove’s paid tiers buy exactly that — the comparison prices it from Foxglove’s own pricing page. |
The six comparisons and roundups
- PlotJuggler vs Foxglove: Free Desktop Tool or Cloud Platform? — the head-to-head most readers arrive for: cost (including Foxglove’s Free and Pro tiers), offline desktop vs web/cloud deployment, MCAP and ROS support on both sides, and team features, with a verdict by user type.
- PlotJuggler vs Rerun: Drag-and-Drop Plotting or Code-First Logging? — no-code GUI analysis against an SDK-first logging stack in Python, Rust and C++, the multimodal overlap now that PlotJuggler 4 renders video and 3D, and the MPL-2.0 vs MIT/Apache licence question.
- PlotJuggler vs rqt_plot: Why ROS Users Switch — the zero-install baseline that ships with ROS against the tool its own author positioned, back in 2017, as a unified replacement for the rqt plotting family.
- Best ROS 2 Data Visualization Tools in 2026 — the roundup: PlotJuggler (both the PJ4 and PJ3 lines), Foxglove, Rerun, rqt_plot and Grafana judged against one criteria table, with a pick for each kind of need.
- Best Drone Flight Log Analysis Tools: ULog, PX4 and ArduPilot — for the flight-log audience: PlotJuggler (which the official PX4 documentation recommends for log analysis), PX4 Flight Review, UAVLogViewer and Mission Planner.
- PlotJuggler Alternatives: When You’ve Outgrown It (and When You Haven’t) — written for the team analysing large volumes of drone flight logs who find the manual workflow slow: first optimise PlotJuggler itself, then judge the genuine scale-out options.
How we compare
Three rules govern every page in this section. First, facts come from primary sources only — a competitor’s pricing, licence or format support is stated only where that project publishes it, and anything we could not verify is left out rather than guessed. Second, verdicts are never tilted: where a rival tool is genuinely better for a stated job, the comparison says so, in so many words. Foxglove, notably, has no affiliate program and appears here purely because readers compare it; no conclusion on this hub is for sale. Third, PlotJuggler’s own limits are stated as plainly as its strengths — it is a desktop application, not a team platform, and the alternatives guide exists precisely for the readers who have hit that boundary.
