PlotJuggler Troubleshooting: Fix the Problem in Front of You
When PlotJuggler refuses to cooperate, the fastest path is to name the symptom precisely and follow the check written for it. A file that will not open is usually a missing loader plugin, not a corrupt file. A curve that will not drag is a different problem from a file that will not drop. An AppImage that does nothing is usually a permission or library-version check, not a broken download. This hub indexes the seven troubleshooting guides on this site by symptom — each one grounded in how PlotJuggler actually works: its plugin architecture, its documented install channels, and the real issues users have filed on the project’s GitHub tracker. This is an independent, unofficial guide; the program itself comes from the official releases on our Download page.
Find your symptom
- “No Such Plugin” — missing data loaders explained — you tried to open a file and PlotJuggler has no loader for it. Loaders are plugins; ROS bag support in particular comes from a separate package.
- Drag and drop not working — a file will not drop into the window, or a series will not drag onto a plot. The two gestures fail for different reasons.
- AppImage won’t open on Linux — double-clicking (or even running) the PJ4 AppImage does nothing. Work through the executable bit, the glibc 2.35 requirement and the .deb alternative.
- ROS 2 plugin not loading — ROS topics or bags are unavailable even though PlotJuggler itself opens. Check the package name, your distribution and how you launched it.
- MCAP file won’t open — an .mcap recording is refused or produces nothing. PJ3 and PJ4 reach MCAP by different routes, and PJ4 can attempt damaged files.
- Slow with large log files — loading takes a long time or the interface feels heavy with a big recording. Separate loading cost from plotting cost before changing anything.
- Right-click menu not working — a checklist for when a right-click produces no menu or the wrong one: focus, window manager, remote desktop and version checks, in order.
Before you troubleshoot: three quick separations
| Question | Why it matters | Where it points you |
|---|---|---|
| Is it an install problem or a use problem? | A program that will not start at all needs different checks from a program that runs but mishandles one file. | Install problems: the Install hub and the dedicated install troubleshooting guide (post 559 in our Install series). |
| Which line are you on — PJ4 or PJ3? | PlotJuggler 4 (4.0.0) and PlotJuggler 3 (3.17.2) differ in plugins, formats and install channels. A fix written for one line can mislead you on the other. | Every guide here states its line scope. When in doubt, check the version first. |
| Does a small, known-good file work? | If a small CSV plots fine, the application and its core loaders are healthy and the problem is specific to that file, format or plugin. | File-specific problems: the plugin, MCAP and large-file guides above. |

Many “troubleshooting” sessions actually end in a workflow question. If PlotJuggler is running fine and you are learning how a feature is meant to work, the Tutorials hub covers loading CSV, ROS bag and MCAP files, comparing recordings, time offsets, XY plots, Lua transforms, layouts and live streaming step by step. If the problem appeared while installing or immediately after — the program will not start, a package was not found, the AppImage will not run — start instead with the Install hub and its install troubleshooting guide, which covers AppImage permission and glibc checks, PJ4-versus-PJ3 package-name confusion, ROS package-not-found and the Windows per-user install location.
A final habit that saves hours: change one thing at a time, and note what you changed. Install the one package a guide names, restart PlotJuggler once, and retest with the same file. Stacking three fixes at once leaves you with a working program and no idea why — which guarantees a repeat visit the next time the symptom appears on another machine.
